Investment Management Research Group (IMRG), 1st Global Advisors, Inc.

The Senior Investment Analyst III is an investment management professional who will likely have an extensive background culled from a variety of previous roles within the financial services or investment management industry. This professional must have a solid understanding and background in investment due diligence and portfolio management.

This professional will play a key role in the ongoing growth and development of 1st Global’s $4B discretionary asset management and advisory platform. The $10B Investment Management Solutions (IMS) Platform includes multiple investment options for 1st Global advisors including discretionary model portfolios, UMAs, alternative investments and retirement products. This position will also influence the Retirement Investment Solutions (RMS) program.

 The Senior Investment Analyst III will have three broad job functions – Due Diligence, Research/Portfolio Management and Reporting/Consulting


 Due Diligence

  • Conducts due diligence of existing or prospective investment managers, funds, ETFs, SMA managers, alternative products and non-traded products in support of 1st Global’s fee-based asset management platform. Some of this due diligence may be conducted as the \u0022lead\u0022 person on a specific project, mandate, or issue. This includes all qualitative and quantitative activities in support of the manager selection and justification behind the IMS Select and RMS Select Portfolios. These activities may include, but are not limited to:
    • Conducting in-depth meetings with fund and portfolio management teams across equity, fixed income and alternative strategies. Meetings are conducted via three channels, depending on the research stage and available group resources: Conference calls, in-office and direct on-sites at PM team locations.
    • Understanding, communicating and documenting the qualitative underpinnings of return and process drivers for investment strategies, generally centered on people, philosophy, process and performance.
    • Supports best-practices by commitment to quality written documentation of due diligence work efforts, manager interactions, portfolio change recommendations and supporting research material
    • Recognize non-investment factors such as operational issues, fee structures, and administrative considerations. Take risk factors into account when analyzing funds and strategies.
  • Candidate will approach due diligence with unbiased views, but must holistically understand how the investment decisions fit into the overall business needs and objectives of 1st Global Advisors, Inc.

Research/Portfolio Management

  • Contributes to decisions regarding investment selection and manager hiring and termination recommendations for 1st Global's discretionary asset management program.
  • Assists and collaborates with the IMRG portfolio managers in all operational and implementation issues related to 1st Global’s discretionary RIA model portfolios and group retirement portfolios, working closely with the other internal parties to effect smooth and error-free portfolio changes
  • Assists and collaborates with the IMRG portfolio managers as the liaison between IMRG and 1st Global’s corporate 401(K) plan
  • Leverages all internal and external resources and tools in manager sourcing and best practices in portfolio level implementation.
  • Responsible for supporting the development of a \u0022bench\u0022 list of prospective investment managers in various asset classes
  • Contributes to the group's work on research, analysis and implementation of the RIA's strategic asset allocation.
  • Procuring and analyzing data from electronic subscription sources such as Morningstar Direct, Bloomberg, and Hedge Fund Research. Knowledge of procuring data from online sources.
  • Maintenance of Morningstar Direct aggregates/composites in support of the IMS Select Portfolios.
  • Structuring the output to support the investment decision-making process. This includes the ability to calculate and intuitively understand basic investment statistics, and the ability to competently work with time series in Excel. Expert ability to create tables, graphs and other visual communication of data is essential.
  • Understanding, after investment selection, how changes in the strategy can influence interaction effects with other assets in the portfolio, and what further changes may need to be considered. To this end, understanding how to monitor portfolio risk measures over time.


  • As assigned, supports the financial advisor and client experience by authoring written sales and marketing collateral including monthly and quarterly reporting of model portfolio and manager results and ad hoc article and whitepapers.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert and resource to internal staff and external financial advisors through formal and informal oral/verbal and written presentations and consultative telephone communications as needed.
  • Presenting the results of due diligence to 1st Global's Investment Committee (IC) in the form of investment recommendations. Support and defend recommendations with superior documentation and rationale.
  • Under direction of IC, researches investment characteristics and industry trends for consideration in product development and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to write interesting economic and investment-type commentary is strongly preferred. Knowing what the top three or four takeaways are from an economic or investment development, and being able to construct a white paper-style piece for distribution to advisors and/or clients is a plus.


  • CFA Charterholder required.
  • Preference for other institutional investment-related designations as well.
  • Current Series 7/ 66 strongly desired (or ability to obtain within six months of employment)
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA preferred.
  • At least 6 years of financial services industry experience with investment strategy due diligence experience a must.
  • Excellent communication, facilitation, and professional writing skills required.
  • Proven ability to communicate and present to any audience, including C-level executives.
  • Excellent organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills required.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively independently, as well as in a team environment
  • Must have strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications, Morningstar Direct and Bloomberg, Expert Excel skills required.
  • Experience in interacting with financial advisors, investment committees and similar internal and external clients within a BD/RIA structure or similar investment firm are strongly desirable.
  • Demonstrates commitment to best practices regarding discretionary investment management.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to be, conversant about a wide range of investment management and financial market topics and concepts.
