Job Description

MISSION AND SUMMARY OF POSITION

The primary focus of the Regulatory Principal Consultant (“RPC”) is to help protect internal and external clients of the firm by ensuring new business is in compliance with Firm guidelines and industry rules. In addition, the RPC must be able to make decisions under limited supervision, and within the framework of the Firm’s policies and procedures. The RPC is also expected to provide timely and proactive service to both internal and external client’s as it relates to the department’s supervisory functions. The RPC works closely with other RPC's and the RP Manager, and also interacts very closely with Advisors and their Assistants to provide education on required procedures and to request information and documentation.

 KEY JOB FUNCTIONS

All responsibilities are generally performed on a daily basis, unless otherwise noted. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide thorough review and approval of new business to determine account suitability including complex products such as Variable Annuities and 1035 exchanges, Alternative Investments and Direct Participation Programs (e.g. non-traded REITs, BDCs, Reg. D private placements and 1031 exchanges), brokerage and advisory accounts, retail direct investment company business and 529 college savings plans.
  • Proactively communicate with financial advisors, their assistants, and internal staff with inquiries regarding suitability of transactions, in order to obtain additional information, when warranted, to complete Principal-approval when appropriate.
  • When proposed business is deemed unsuitable for the client, the RPC will communicate with the advisor(s) and their staff to provide regulatory insight, modest education, and rationale regarding unsuitability while seeking to provide alternative solutions.
  • Maintain accurate knowledge of all product lines and perform special projects as assigned. Identify and recommend ideas for process and procedure improvements.
  • Other, including but not limited to, supporting the Manager of the Regulatory Principal Department as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree or higher in an associated field preferred.
  • Series 7, 24, and 66 (or 63 and 65) are required, while the Series 4 and 53 and/or the Series 9/10 are preferred; industry designations are recommended.
  • Ideal candidate will have direct sales supervision experience or 5-plus years of securities industry experience and must possess knowledge of SEC regulation and FINRA rule requirements.
 SKILLS

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. The ability to communicate a negative message in a positive manner.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills required.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task required.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Must have the ability to work effectively independently, as well as in a team environment.
  • Must have strong computer skills, including proficiency in MS Office applications including Excel and Word.
